St John's Feast in Australia
June 2000

writing Saviour Alvin Vella from Australia

I am going to give you a bit of background on how we organize the feast.

On the Friday we have a Mass and confessions and then we gather in the hall of the parish where we organize the feast. The parish is "Holy Eucharist" in St.Albans.

On Saturday we organize a big dinner dance in a reception centre. This year we had 570 people. We inaugurated the statue of St.John as a child. The dinner dance is a five course meal with a lot of entertainment. We had a
live band and a Dj and also had a brass band playing marches from the feast. Everyone got on the floor with flags and it was great.

On Sunday we have a Mass, followed by the procession and then everyone to the hall again for more entertainment. We usually have a Dj there. The church was also full which was great, the religious aspects of the feast are the most important after all.

Cakes that we had at the dinner dance (one was in the shape
of a lamb and the others had computer images of St. John).

Comments after the feast

The feast was a huge success over here. I am sure that in Xewkija it was
much much better. This is some information about the feast we had here.

To start with we were a bit worried, because the priest of the church were
we organize the feast had booked a wedding at 2:30pm, the time when we start
the mass. He found out last week when we put the books in the church and he
saw the time. We put notices on the radio, told the people in the dinner
dance and talked to a lot of people that the mass now was going to start at
3:30pm. We were worried that people will turn up early and start
complaining.

Somehow St.John helped us, because we didn't have one complain. The church
was packed with people. This was the best attendance in years. The weather
was also very good. It reminded me of the weather we normally have at
Xewkija. It was a fine day, with no clouds, but it was a bit windy. The
procession went very well although here at this time of year it starts
getting dark around 5:00pm. Most of the people that came also came to the
hall to spend the rest of the evening there. We had the bands playing for
about an hour and then we had a DJ.
It was another successful evening all round.
